Tulalip sits on the Tulalip Indian Reservation, west of Marysville and close to the Interstate 5 corridor. We are based in Everett and drive out to Tulalip for deck work. This page covers what is particular to decks in the area, the work we do, and how a visit goes.

Why decks around Tulalip wear the way they do

The Tulalip Indian Reservation covers 34.7 square miles west of Marysville, between Puget Sound and the Interstate 5 corridor. That is a lot of ground, and the lots on it vary. Some sit near the water, some back into trees, and some are in newer neighbourhoods close to Quil Ceda Village. The deck problems follow the site more than the address.

This part of the mid-Puget Sound region is wet for much of the year. A deck that stays damp and shaded grows moss and algae on the surface, and the boards stay wet long enough for rot to start where two pieces of wood meet. Look at the board ends, the gaps around fasteners, the joist tops under the boards, and the places where a post sits on a footing. These are the spots where water collects first.

Decks under trees are a particular problem. Needles and leaves pack into the gaps between boards and hold water against the wood. Decks on sloped ground often have taller posts and more bracing, so a loose connection shows up as sway before it shows up as a visible crack. If you walk across your deck and feel it move, treat that as a reason to have it looked at, not a quirk.

Deck repair, building and replacement we offer in Tulalip

We do three kinds of work, and the right one depends on what is under the boards.

Deck repair covers most calls. That means replacing soft or split boards, fixing rot in a joist or beam, resetting a leaning post, repairing stairs and re-fastening a ledger board where the deck meets the house. It also includes staining and sealing, and a general inspection when you want to know where a deck stands before you decide anything. If the frame is sound and only the surface is tired, repair is usually the sensible route.

Deck building is for new decks and for additions to an existing one. That includes composite and PVC decking, railing, covers, a second-story deck, an extension, and waterproof decking over a living space. Composite and PVC suit wet sites because they do not rot, though the frame underneath still needs to be built and fastened correctly.

Deck replacement makes sense when the frame itself has failed. If several joists are rotted, the posts have settled, or the ledger has pulled away from the house, patching one section at a time costs more over the years than starting again. Replacement can mean resurfacing over a sound frame or removing the old deck entirely and building new.

Checking for rot, loose ledgers and failing posts

A deck can look fine from above and be failing underneath, so an inspection starts from below where it can be reached. We probe wood with a screwdriver or awl. Solid wood resists, while rotted wood sinks in and comes away in soft fibres. We check the joists and beams, the posts and the footings, and the hardware that ties them together, such as joist hangers, post bases and bolts.

The ledger board gets close attention. It is the board that fastens the deck to the house, and it takes the most water because rain runs down the wall and into the joint. Check for stains on the siding above it, loose or rusted fasteners, and any gap between the ledger and the wall. A ledger that has come loose is a safety problem, and the deck should not be used until it is dealt with.

Railings and stairs are the other early warning. A railing post that moves when you push on it, or a stair stringer with a soft spot at the bottom, usually means water has been getting in for some time. Fixing the cause matters as much as replacing the part.

What a deck visit in Tulalip involves

We serve Tulalip from Everett. We do not have an office in Tulalip, so the first step is a call or a request through the site, and then we arrange a time to come to the property.

On the visit, we walk the deck, look at it from above and below, and check the points described above. We ask what you have noticed, where the deck feels soft or loose, and what you want from it, whether that is a quick fix or a long-term answer. You get a plain explanation of what is wrong and what the options are, including the option of doing less when less is enough.

If the work is a repair, we describe what needs to be replaced and why. If the frame is the problem, we say so and talk through resurfacing or replacement. Where permits or other approvals may apply to the work on your property, we raise it early so it does not hold things up later. Ask about this when you call.
